How to Wash Silk in a Washing Machine: A Fashion Designer's (MA) Guide

•

Written by: Fashion Designer (MA), Baiba Ladiga - Kobayashi

As a fashion designer with a Master of Arts degree and years of experience working with premium textiles, the most common question I receive is: "Can I put my silk in the washing machine?" Most mass-market brands recommend dry cleaning or hand-washing only, simply because their fabric is too thin to withstand mechanical stress. However, by understanding the molecular structure of silk protein fibers and using the correct tools, machine washing is entirely safe.

Fabric Density Determines Durability

The primary enemy of silk is not water—it is the mechanical friction and rotation generated by the washing machine drum. This friction creates micro-tears in the fabric. This is exactly why our studio works exclusively with 23 Momme 100% Mulberry silk. Unlike the thinner 19 or 22 Momme alternatives, 23 Momme provides a significantly higher density of silk fibers per square meter, making your silk pillowcases and accessories highly resistant to physical wear and tear.

How to Wash Silk: 3 Engineering Principles

  1. Controlled Temperature: Always use the "Delicate", "Hand wash", or "Silk" machine cycle. The water temperature must never exceed 30°C (86°F). Heat disrupts the protein structure, causing irreversible shrinkage and loss of natural luster.
  2. PH-Neutral Chemistry: Standard laundry detergents contain enzymes designed to break down protein-based stains. Since silk itself is a protein, these enzymes will literally dissolve your pillowcase over time. Only use liquid detergents explicitly labeled as "Suitable for Silk".
  3. Physical Isolation (The Critical Step): Silk should never be thrown into the machine loosely. It must be completely isolated from contact with other fabrics, hardware, or zippers.

Why a Fine Mesh Laundry Bag is a Necessity

Putting a 23 Momme silk pillowcase into a fine mesh laundry bag to prevent friction

To completely eliminate the risk of friction damage, we have engineered a high-density fine mesh laundry bag for silk. Its specific mesh structure allows optimal water and detergent flow while strictly blocking the fabric from rubbing against the metal walls of the washing machine.

🎁 Exclusive Offer for Silk Longevity

As a designer, my priority is ensuring your investment lasts for years, not months. That is why every Baiba Ladiga 23 Momme silk pillowcase now comes with a FREE fine mesh laundry bag (value €4.00).

You do not need to add anything extra to your cart—the gift will be automatically included in your package.

The Drying Protocol

Never use a tumble dryer or expose silk to direct UV sunlight, as both will cause the fibers to become brittle and fade. Silk must be air-dried in the shade, either laid flat on a clean towel or hung smoothly.
