Baiba Ladiga - Kobayashi Design Story: A 100-Year Silk Legacy

A Story That Begins in 1920 Latvia

In 1920, during first Latvia independence, one family quietly began working with silk. It was an era of newfound freedom, flourishing textile artisan culture, and bold creative ambition across the young nation.

Over a century later, that same silk knowledge is curling hair in more than 50 countries. This is the story of  professonal fashion designer Baiba Ladiga-Kobayashi, the third-generation silk artisan who carries this Latvian silk heritage forward.

This is not simply a product story. It is a heritage story that happens to have changed how women style their hair.

Who Is Baiba Ladiga-Kobayashi?

Baiba's path to becoming one of Latvia's most distinctive designers was anything but conventional. She began her career as a fashion editor at just 18 years old. In 2004, she graduated with an MA from the Latvia Academy of Arts fashion design department, a foundation that gave her both technical mastery and an artist's eye for materials.

Her career then took her across continents. She worked at Intimissimi in Italy, immersing herself in European luxury lingerie craftsmanship. From 2007 to 2013, she served as a fashion design tutor at Raffles Design Institute in Shanghai, gaining a truly global perspective on luxury materials and the standards that define world-class craft.

Baiba's return to Latvia was not a retreat. It was a deliberate choice, rooted in identity, sustainability, and generational pride. She chose to continue what her family had started over a century ago. In 2020, that commitment was recognised when she won the Latvia Sustainability Fashion Award, a signal to the world that responsible fashion and artisan quality are not opposites; they are inseparable.

The Meaning Behind the Name: Kobayashi

The name Kobayashi Design comes from the surname of Baiba Ladiga - Kobayashi husband, Japanese architect Reiji Kobayashi. In Japanese, "Kobayashi" translates to "small forest," a name that speaks directly to the brand's deep connection to nature and to the minimalist design philosophy running through every product.

This is where East meets West in the most authentic way possible. Latvian generational craft tradition, with its rich textile heritage documented by the Latvian National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, fuses with Japanese minimalism and precision. The result is a multicultural origin story no competitor in the global luxury beauty accessories market can replicate.

The name itself has become a design philosophy: small, intentional, natural, enduring. Every Kobayashi Design piece reflects this. Nothing is accidental; everything is considered.

Why Silk? The Science Behind the Curl

Our silk heatless curler is made from 22 momme Grade 6A Mulberry silk, the highest quality classification of silk available anywhere in the world. Choosing this silk is not about luxury for its own sake. It is about what this material does for your hair.

Mulberry silk contains natural proteins, primarily fibroin (75 to 80%), along with amino acids including glycine, alanine, and serine. According to Clinikally, these compounds actively hydrate and condition hair overnight, making mulberry silk scientifically superior to synthetic satin alternatives for heatless curling.

Independent laboratory testing from October 2025 confirmed that pure mulberry silk reduces hair-damaging friction by 34% compared to cotton, while cotton creates 51% more friction. A 2025 clinical study by Kosmoscience confirmed significant frizz reduction and hair protection across all hair types, including curly hair.

Silk can also absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp, helping regulate humidity and keep your hair hydrated while you sleep. All our fabrics are certified, meaning they are free from toxic or allergenic substances. For eco-conscious buyers, this is not a nice-to-have; it is essential.

The numbers tell the wider story. Over 70% of women globally express concerns about heat styling damage, and according to industry research, approximately 60% of consumers are now actively seeking heat-free alternatives. The shift toward healthier hair care is not a passing trend. It is a fundamental change.

From Latvia to the World: The Curler That Started a Movement

The Kobayashi Design silk heatless curler launched in 2021 on our website and Etsy as the first long silk heatless curler made in Latvia. What began as a single product rooted in family craft knowledge has since expanded into multiple sizes: Small, Large, Extra Long, and Extra Large. The Extra Long version is patented, a legal and innovation milestone that reflects genuine design originality.

Today, the brand holds a 4.90 out of 5 star rating with hundreds of verified reviews. That consistency is not accidental. It is the result of every curler being entirely handmade in Latvia, with the same attention to detail our family has applied to silk for over a century.

The global heatless curler market was valued at approximately €161 million in 2024 and is projected to reach around €242 million by 2030 at a 7.05% CAGR, according to GII Research. Within this growing market, silk products now capture 60% of premium market segments. Our curler is loved by thousands of women across more than 50 countries, and for a handmade, family-run Latvian brand, that reach is something we are deeply proud of.

The Origami Fold: Where Craft Meets Packaging

When you receive Baiba Ladiga  original design Kobayashi Design curler, the first thing you notice is the packaging. Our signature origami-style cross-folding makes the curler look like a luxury gift straight out of the box. No wrapping needed, no extra effort required. It is ready to give and ready to love.

The wide continuous ribbon ties are engineered not to break under pressure, a deliberate design improvement over competitors' narrow attached ties, which tend to fray and snap. It is a small detail that reflects a big philosophy: every element must be considered, functional, and beautiful.

The packaging is also travel-friendly and aligns with our zero-waste fashion principles. Whether you are gifting it for Mother's Day, Christmas, Valentine's Day, or a birthday, the presentation speaks for itself. This is innovation rooted in craft tradition; the same attention to detail applied to silk garments for 100 years, now applied to a beauty accessory.

A Legacy Worth Wearing

From a family beginning their silk work in newly independent Latvia in 1920, to a globally loved heatless curling rod handmade in the same tradition today, the Kobayashi Design story spans a century and two continents. Every curler carries over 100 years of silk knowledge, cultural identity, and generational pride.

When you use this curler, you become part of that story. You are choosing heritage over mass production, natural materials over synthetics, and craft that endures over trends that fade.

We invite you to explore the full Kobayashi Design collection and experience the difference that heritage craftsmanship makes. Visit our website or find us on Etsy, wherever you are in the world.
